JEFF LEW
I am a self taught computer animator. Since 1997, I have worked on such
films as Matrix Reloaded (as Lead Animator), X-Men, Looney Tunes: Back
in Action, The Amazing Spiderman Ridefilm, The Simpsons Ridefilm, as
well as Transformers 2. In 2003, I took a 4 year hiatus from working as
an animator to create and produce my feature film directorial debut.
I grew up with a video camera in one hand and a computer
mouse in the other. Like many filmmakers, I knew early in life what I
wanted to do for a living: make movies.
I went to college for engineering, but soon realized
engineering wasn't for me, and my desire to make movies never faded.
After college, I got a job as a web designer, and at night I learned
the art and techniques of computer animation, with the hope of one day
creating my own animated feature film. I designed a character that I
could practice animation on. His name was Killer Bean. I made a 3
minute short called "Killer Bean: The Interrogation." The short had
some small cult success on the internet, but it was mostly a training
tool for me in 3d animation.
After 2 years of learning animation, I landed my first
professional job as an animator. For the next 6 years, I worked on big
Hollywood blockbusters.
All the while, I was working on my next short in my spare time. The
first short, Killer Bean 1, was to learn 3d animation. My goal for the
second short was to grow as a filmmaker. After 3 years, I completed a 7
minute short called "Killer Bean 2: The Party."
During my animation career, I learned a lot of things. I
learned about art, about computer animation techniques, about what goes
into making a movie - from previs, to post production, to politics. But
the most important thing I learned is that I still wanted to make my
own movie. In 2003, I took a haitus from my job as an animator to
pursue my dream of making movies.
I started work on the 3rd installment of Killer Bean,
the biggest one yet: "Killer Bean Forever." Living off my life savings,
I spent the past 4 years working 14 hours a day, 6 days a week on my CG
animated feature. Now my movie is completely done, and I'm ready for my
next movie which will be something completely different.
